Why custom beats template.
Templates are seductive. They're cheap, fast, and they work — for someone else. When you install a template, you're wearing clothes that were tailored for a stranger. The buttons are in the same places your competitors' buttons are. The hero says the same things their hero says. There is nothing memorable, because memorable wasn't the goal.
As a freelance web designer working directly with Atlanta small businesses, I start from a different question: what does this specific business need to say, to this specific audience, to win this specific decision? That's a different website every time. And that's why I build every one from scratch.
What "hand-coded" actually means
I don't drag and drop your website together. I write the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript by hand — which means no mystery bloat, no 400-kilobyte JavaScript bundles loading three libraries to animate a button, and no fifty-plugin WordPress install that breaks every time a dependency updates.
